A top US army officer has reportedly said that the harm done due to the revelations by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden would need two years to overcome.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff US Army General Martin Dempsey said that the 'vast majority' of documents were related to military capabilities, operations, tactics, techniques and procedures.

He further said that the cost of recovering from the damage could possibly reach up to billions of dollars, the BBC reports.

The revelations made by Snowden have upset US ties with its allies and exposed its military surveillance capabilities.

Gen Dempsey said that a mitigation task force had been established to investigate the extent of Snowden's theft and to determine how to overcome it and the magnitude of the challenge suggests that the task force would need to run for about two years.

Snowden, who leaked the classified documents about the US' mass surveillance programme has been charged with espionage and is currently under temporary asylum in Russia.
