Several models have staged a topless protest in Rio de Janeiro against the low presence of Afro-Brazilians on fashion catwalks.

According to G1 news website, the protest coincided with the Rio Fashion Week and the signing of a deal between the Fashion Week organizers and the Rio ombudsman's office setting a 10 per cent quota for black models in fashion shows, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

One of the female demonstrators wrote ''what strikes you, your racism or me?'' on her chest during the protest.

Afro-Brazilian models had protested against the widespread racial inequality even though more than half of Brazil's 200 million people are of African descent.
