Unhygienic conditions in the scenic hill town of Gulmarg have left tourists very disappointed.

"Tourists experience unhygienic conditions due to the foul smell of poo of the horses. When it's impossible for us to walk in such conditions, then, just think how the tourist feels. Tourists arriving from Mumbai or New Delhi come here to admire nature, but what they actually get to see is dirt," said Gulam Mohammad, a horse owner.

"If tourist destinations are unhygienic and dirty, then why would tourists visit such places? We have heard that Kashmir is like heaven on earth, but when we visit this place, it seems the grass is greener on the other side," said Kavita, a tourist.

Horse dung is scattered all over roads in Gulmarg, and its foul smell is a major irritant for tourists.

"Riding a horse was a wonderful experience but measures should be taken to clean the poo of the horse, which is lying everywhere on the streets. These unhygienic conditions do not leave a good impression on tourists," said Manish, another tourist.

Visitors said the tourism industry would be affected if no remedial measures are taken.
