Transport unions across the country announced indefinite strike from Friday demanding reduction in diesel prices and toll fees.
The strike was announced on Thursday night after the talks of negotiation between the All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) and the Union government did not yield desired result.
The AIMTC calls itself the apex body of transporters in the country and is supported by other transport organisations.
"The government is continuously increasing the fuel price. They are even taking toll tax, but doing nothing for us. Every year they increase the price of the fuel, which creates a problem for us," a truck driver from Chandigarh said.
The nation-wide strike by truckers might also affect supplies of essential items.
The transport unions have been protesting against the constant increase in fuel prices, toll expenses, Goods and Service Tax (GST) compliance issues, practical problems with e-way bills.
