The northeastern state of Manipur has been enduring a prolonged economic blockade, effected by the United Naga Council (UNC), over the creation of new districts.
Tripartite talks were held in Manipur to resolve the problem of creation of the seven new districts, particularly Sadar hills and Jiribam district. The seventh round of the talks involved the state government, the Centre and United Naga Council and was held in DRDA Conference hall in Senapati District headquarters. The meeting was chaired by Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary (Northeast) in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
During the tripartite talk, the UNC demanded the State Government to pass a resolution in the assembly and asked to come up with a solution by 10 April and said that the further course of actions will be rolled out in the next meeting which is to be held on 27 April.
Satyendra Garg stated that he is not really aware of what has been set on the floor of the house but what he has previewed to is State Boundary Commission was constituted but has not started working and the entire issue of UNC demands of revocation of the districts and everything related to UNC will be decided by Govt of Manipur by 10th of April and we will discuss it in the next round.
Gaidon Kamei, President, United Naga Council also stated that they have given enormous time to decide on or before 10th of April. We have put forward all the points and we have cornered them and they have given their commitment, cabinet meeting likely to be held on 10th April. If not so they will hear something from us.
On one hand, the UNC is not giving up its demand to welsh the creation of the districts while on the other hand, the center is leaving no stone unturned to find out a mutual solution.
Manipur government representatives comforted that all possible steps will be taken by maintaining peace if new district comes into.
