The Border Security Force on Sunday intercepted three Bangladesh-bound trucks at Bodjungnagar in Tripura, from which 65,000 bottles of contraband cough syrup were seized.
Acting on a tip from the intelligence wing of the BSF, the security forces, along with customs and police officers, detained the trucks and discovered the bottles of Phensedyle cough syrup, reportedly worth Rs one crores, concealed under fruit cartoons.
"We have been on hunt of these vehicles as we had specific information about them. Ultimately, we got them at Bodhjungnagar. [The cough syrup] is smuggled to Bangladesh as there is huge demand for them there," said customs inspector Sraban Shaurab, who was part of the search team.
He further stated that the trucks were registered in Rajasthan and Punjab in an attempt to avoid police checkpoints.
As per sources, the cough syrup, which costs around Rs 100 per bottle in India, fetches prices in excess of Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) 600 across the border.
