In a bizarre incident in the remote area of Champahawar of Tripura's Khowai district, a father killed a girl child by throwing her in a rivulet on Saturday.
Reshmi Debbarma, the mother of the deceased, alleged that her husband was under the influence of alcohol.
"My husband Rustam Debbarma has been torturing our daughter ever since she was born. On the fatal night, he returned home in an inebriated state and assaulted me. As I went out of the room in fear, he threw the baby girl in the nearby rivulet," she said.
Phanindra Debbarma, the grandfather of the deceased, asserted that he was helpless as by the time he could do anything Rustam had already killed the child by throwing her into the rivulet.
Rustam, who has been arrested, confessed that he committed the crime out of anguish after he was beaten up by his wife.
Officer in charge, the Champahawar Police Station, Ajoy Chakma said, "At around 12:30, we came to know that the father had killed his ten-month-old daughter."
"We have registered a case and started an investigation. The body has been sent to hospital for post-mortem. The culprit has been arrested and presented to the court," he added.
