A zoo in Tripura's Dhalai District has taken charge of two bear cubs that were found by construction workers near the Indo- border.

The abandoned cubs were rescued from the M K Para area of remote Dhalai District by construction officials.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Gandacherra), Bhaskar Dasgupta, said such incidents are quite common due to Jhum farming and human encroachment, resulting in man-animal conflicts.

He said the forest department is trying its best to stop Jhum cultivation.

Dasgupta said the cubs are in very weak condition, and would not have survived in the wild.

Zoo officials said that their mother might have deserted her cubs for fear of a fire which is lit to clean the jungle during the Jhum season.

The two bear cubs have been named Jambhu and Sambhu. They are presently lodged in the Sepahijala Zoo.
