President Donald Trump has congratulated Dr. David Shulkin, who was confirmed unanimously as Secretary of Veterans Affairs by the Senate.

"Congratulations to our new #VASecretary Dr. David Shulkin. Time to take care of Veterans who have fought to protect our country!," Trump tweeted later in the day.

A practicing physician, Shulkin has served since July 2015 as undersecretary for the agency's largest division, the Veterans Health Administration, which has about 300,000 employees in more than 1,200 health care facilities serving nearly 9 million veterans annually, reports the Washington Times.

Also, he will be the first nonveteran to head the sprawling department with a $182 billion budget and chronic unresolved challenges from the previous administration in providing health care for veterans.

Trump also congratulated Steven Mnuchin on his confirmation as Treasury Secretary.
