Trump's Nobel Peace Prize nominations were 'forgeries'

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has uncovered two fraudulent Nobel Prize nominations for United States Presidents Donald Trump.

Olav Njolstad, the secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the prize, told The Washington Post that the committee had detected the "forged" nominations and raised the issue with the Oslo police.

"We receive many invalid nominations each year in the sense that they don't meet the deadline or the nominator is not, in fact, qualified to nominate. But to my knowledge this is the first example of a forged nomination where someone has stolen the identity of another person," Njolstad said in an email.

 

A valid nomination for the award can only be made by a person who falls under specific criteria, prescribed by the committee, like a current head of state, former Nobel Peace Prize winners and professors of history, law or philosophy, among others, according to the reports.

The person responsible for both the forged nominations had pretended to be someone qualified to make the nomination, according to Njolstad.

There are 328 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, the second highest number of candidates ever, according to the organisation.

Barack Obama (2009), Jimmy Carter (2002), Woodrow Wilson (1919) and Theodore Roosevelt (1906) are the only US presidents who are Nobel Laureates as well.

The Nobel Peace Prize, which is usually announced in October, will be awarded this year on December 10 in Oslo.
