U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an order to put an end to a regulation by Obama administration to ban gun purchases by mentally ill.
The original rule aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of some severely mentally ill people and to curb gun violence in the country.
The Republican-controlled House and Senate using the Congressional Review Act voted to send the bill to Trump's desk, reports CNN.
The regulation required the Social Security Administration to disclose information about people with mental illness quarterly to the national gun background check system.
It was estimated by the Obama administration that the new rule would have affected roughly 75,000 individuals annually.
Both the National Rifle Association and the American Civil Liberties Union opposed the rule.
