Frenchman Jo Wilfried Tsonga delighted the home crowd by defeating Czech star Tomas Berdych to reach the quarter finals on an otherwise grey day at Roland Garros.

The number 14 seed made it through to the last eight with a thrilling 6-3, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory over fourth-seeded Berdych, who was continuously being booed by fans over his demands of suspending the match amid drizzle.

Tsonga failed to serve out at 5-4 up in the third, but delivered two aces in the final game to beat Berdych.

Jubilant with the victory, Wilfried said that he knew how to use his brain, although he forgets to do it sometimes, the BBC reported.

Tsonga will now play Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals, with the Japanese enjoying a straightforward 6-3 6-4 6-2 win over Teymuraz Gabashvili.

Meanwhile, Ana Ivanovic beat Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 to make the last eight for the first time since lifting the title in 2008.

Roger Federer and Gael Monfils were level at one set each when play was suspended, while Stan Wawrinka swept past Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
