A large number of workers on Tuesday conducted a rally across Turkey including Istanbul and capital Ankara to mark the celebrations of the International Workers Day, locally known as May Day.

The major celebration of the May Day was conducted at Maltepe coast on the Anatolian side of Istanbul amidst tight security, as reported by the Anadolu Agency.

Further, a number of rallies were conducted in Maltepe, Beyoglu, Sisli, and Besiktas districts. Various labour unions and political parties including the main opposition Republican People's Party also took part in the celebrations.

The participants carried various banners reading out "Long live May 1" and "Long live our fight for freedom".

Further, in Ankara, the march began from Ataturk culture centre in Kazim Karabekir Street which culminated into an open-air meeting at Anadolu Square.

The Turkish authorities banned gatherings in Besiktas and Taksim Squares.

Apart from recognising May 1 as the International Labour day, Turkish remember this day for the 1977 massacre when an unidentified gunman fired on protesters gathered peacefully.
