A Turkish cleric has supported marriages between children and adults saying that "for Muslims who believe in the Quran, there is nothing such as an age limit for marrying".
According to the New York Post, Nureddin Yildiz said that Islam does not impose any age restrictions when it comes to marriage.
The 59-year-old cleric said that children could even be married before puberty.
The cleric's statement was condemned by the country's main opposition Republican People's Party.
Party lawmaker Nur Serter said that the cleric's statements incite child rape.
