Turkish athlete Asli Cakir Alptekin has been stripped of her 2012 Olympic gold medal and has been handed eight-year suspension for a doping offence, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has confirmed.
According to the BBC, the 29-year-old had earlier served a two-year ban after a positive dope test as a junior in 2004.
Athletics found itself engulfed in a fresh doping crisis after The Sunday Times and German broadcaster ARD/WDR said that they had obtained access to the results of 12,000 blood tests from 5,000 athletes between 2001 and 2012.
According to them, the leaked data reveals that more than a third of medals, including 55 golds have been won in endurance events at the Olympics and world championships by athletes who have recorded 'suspicious tests'.
IAAF had suspended 28 athletes as a result of suspicious findings in doping tests.
