Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has claimed victory for his party in local elections.

According to the BBC, Erdogan was not standing for election but campaigned hard for his Justice and Development Party (AKP).

With over 60 percent of the votes counted, AKP won with 47 percent votes over the main opposition party at 27 percent.

Speaking from a balcony at his party's headquarters in Ankara, Erdogan thanked his supporters.

He however warned he would 'enter the lair' of enemies who had accused him of corruption and leaked state secrets, the report added.
