At least two people were killed and 13 others injured in an explosion on a ferry carrying 35 tourists between the Indonesian resort islands of Bali and Lombok on Thursday.

Police said that two have been identified as an Indonesian and a Dutch national.

"Two of them died, 13 were injured," the Guardian quoted Bali police spokesman Made Sudana as saying.

He added that it seemed there was some sort of explosion on the boat, so there was an emergency with the engine.

Though the cause of the explosion in the speedboat has not been identified, the police said they did not think it was caused by a bomb.

Authorities said that injured passengers included nationals from Portugal, Germany, Australia, South Korea and Britain.

The blast occurred after the boat carrying 35 passengers, all foreigners, and four crew had just left Padang Bai port in eastern Bali.

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the matter and police and the bomb squad have been deployed.

Both Bali and Lombok are two of Indonesia's most popular holiday destinations.
