Major joint search operations have been launched to rescue trekkers who are stranded for more than four days in Badrinath-Madmaheshwar trekking route in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) choppers along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are on its way to the spot.

The officials said that the trekkers are stuck near the Panpatia glacier, located at an altitude of 4,000 metres.

An IAF chopper which was sent on Wednesday afternoon to airlift the trekkers returned to Joshimath in Chamoli district due to inclement weather.

The group which comprised five trekkers and four to five porters had embarked on the trek from Badrinath to Madmaheshwar almost a week ago.

Heavy snowfall late last week coupled with the unfamiliarity of many in the group with the mountainous terrain is believed to have contributed to extreme fatigue and mountain sickness for the trekkers, rendering them incapable to proceed further.
