The Pentagon has confirmed that Ahmed Abdi Godane, leader of al Qaeda linked militant group al Shabaab has been killed in Somalia in a United States airstrike that was carried out on Monday this week.
According to the BBC, the airstrike had destroyed a vehicle and encampment in the southern area of Somalia's capital Mogadishu.
Godane had been in the top list of America's most wanted men.
The al Shabaab fighters' motive was to overthrow the United Nations backed Somali government.
Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud had offered amnesty to al Shabaab militants on Friday while Somali and American officials were still examining the attack results.
Mohamoud had given a 45 day period for the militants to accept the offer and ensured a better livelihood to those who met the deadline.
