The United States military has launched airstrikes in Somalia against an al-Qaeda linked militant group called al-Shabaab, the Pentagon announced on Monday.

The Pentagon press secretary said that U.S. military conducted the airstrikes today and that they were still accessing the results.

According to CBS News, the operation included an airstrike with no ground operations so far.

Al-Shabaab militants had reportedly set off a car bomb at an intelligence centre and prison in an effort to release convicts.

The gunfight with the military forces resulted in the killing of 12 people including all the attackers.

Al-Shabaab militants had earlier been held responsible for an attack in a shopping mall in Kenya in 2013 where 68 people were killed and 175 injured.
