Five-time U.S. Open champion Roger Federer has entered the second round of the tournament after completing a first-round win over Australia's Marinko Matosevic.
The second seeded Swiss took two hours and 26 minutes to beat world number 76 Matosevic 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-4), reports the BBC.
In the women's draw, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and runner-up Eugenie Bouchard also won their respective first round matches.
Third seed Kvitova outclassed France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-1 6-0 and seventh seed Bouchard thumped Bulgaria's Olga Govortsova 6-2 6-1.
Eighth seed Ana Ivanovic beat American Alison Riske 6-3 6-0 in 65 minutes, while Samantha Stosur was a 6-1 6-4 winner over Laura Davis.
