U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday arrived in Mexico to mend bilateral ties which have received a major blow since Donald Trump became the President.

It is believed that Trump's rhetoric and policies have cranked up the tension in U.S.-Mexico relations to a new high.

Trump blamed Mexico for sending rapists into the U.S. and castigated undocumented immigrants from across the border. He even blasted Mexico for what he says are unfair trade practices.

One of Trump's first actions as the President was to order the construction of a wall that he insisted Mexico will pay for, despite the country's repeated refusals.

Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly arrived in Mexico for meetings with President Pena Nieto, Mexican ministers and military officials.

Both the leaders will meet the Mexican ministers of Interior, Foreign Relations, Finance, National Defense and Navy. The group will discuss border security, law enforcement cooperation and trade, among other issues.

The day in Mexico City will represent the first known high-level meetings between the U.S. and Mexican officials since Nieto cancelled a visit to Washington on January 27 after President Trump declared that there was no point in him coming if Mexico wouldn't agree to pay for a border wall, reports CNN.
