The United States would send an additional 350 troops to Iraq in order to safeguard U.S. staff stationed in Baghdad, claimed the White House.

U.S. President Barack Obama approved the request for additional troops today after the Defence department reviewed State department's demand for extra military personnel for security.

According to ABC News, Obama said that the troops would not start any fight in the country.

A U.S. official said that the troops consisted of Marines and Army personnel serving in the U.S. Central Command's theater of operations.

The U.S. military earlier extended its campaign against Islamic State militants southward in the town of Amirli to help Shiite Turkmen.
