Re-affirming his vow to destroy the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS), U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday said that his government will pursue the 'realistic' goal in taking down the terror organisation.

"Destroying ISIL is not only a realistic goal, were going to get it done. We will destroy them. We will take back land they are currently in, take out their financing, hunt down leadership, dismantle their networks, supply lines and we will destroy them," Obama told the media here after meeting with Asian leaders.

He also asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin should side with the U.S. coalition in going after the terror outfit, in the wake of the Russian passenger plane being brought down by the ISIS which killed all 224 people on board.

Obama also demanded that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must step down immediately, asserting that as long as the latter was in office, the ongoing violence and chaos in Syria will not end.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also called made a strong stand against terrorism and called for a new global resolve to combat terrorism.

Addressing the 10th East Asia Summit here, he stressed that new strategies needed to be formulated on a global scale without balancing it against political considerations, to combat the menace of terrorism.

"In this forum we often thought of terrorism as a peripheral problem for this region. The barbaric terror strikes in Paris, Ankara, Beirut, Mali and on the Russian aircraft is a stark reminder that its shadow stretches across our society and our world, both in recruitment and choice of targets," the Prime Minister said.
