Uber acquires mapping company deCarta

Taxi-hailing service Uber has reportedly acquired deCarta, a platform for location services including, mapping.

According to The Verge, the company will become a subsidiary of Uber and will continue to offer products including local search and turn-by-turn navigation. Of the firm's 40 employees, 30 will remain at Uber including, its CEO.

"A lot of the functionality that makes the Uber app so reliable, affordable and seamless is based on mapping technologies," Uber said.

The company has been investing more in mapping as it develops UberPOOL, a multi-person ride hailing offering, which would involve more complex routing.

Although terms of the deal have not been revealed yet but a report said that DeCarta raised 56.1 million dollars.
