Self-driving cars may soon join Uber's fleet of taxis as the taxi-hailing service is working to develop the advance technology, the company said.

Uber announced its joint plans with Carnegie Mellon University to set up the Uber Advanced Technologies Center in Pittsburgh. Some of its projects would include, research, designing autonomous vehicles, as well as vehicle safety technologies, The Verge reported.

The company said in a blog post that the liaison would create a forum for Uber technology leaders to work closely with faculty, staff, and students, both on campus and at the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC), to conduct research and development in the areas of mapping and vehicle safety and autonomy technology.

A formal event for the project is expected to occur in Pittsburgh in the coming weeks.

The move comes a year after Uber CEO Travis Kalanick remarked that self-driving cars were "inevitable" for the company's business.
