Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat on Monday accused the U.S. - based corporate cab service Uber of being criminally negligent and following practices that were wholly contradictory to its established work ethics.

Furious over the incident, Karat reacted, "Companies like Uber promote something else and their practice is wholly contradictory. The accused was imprisoned for 7 months and had been recruited without any verification."

Karat was reacting to the rape of 27-year-old woman who had used the Uber cab service over the weekend.

The CPI-M leader endorsed the view that Uber should have undertaken a profile check of Shiv Kumar, the accused driver, before hiring here.
