The UK's drug safety body, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, has confirmed that the heart attack preventing drug statins are not at all harmful for health.

Dr June Raine, the watchdog's director of risk management, said that the extensive clinical trials have proven that statins can save lives by reducing the risk of heart attacks, stroke and the need for heart surgery, the Daily Express reported.

Statins, are a group of medicines that particularly target 'bad cholesterol' in the blood and help preventing diseases related to it but a controversial article in the British Medical Journal earlier this year argued that they do more harm than good as they cause diabetes and muscle pain.
