The British lawyer representing Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has called on the UK to intervene on his client's behalf amid fears that he will not get a fair trial and will be sentenced to death.
According to The Guardian, John Jones QC has urged the UK government to condemn Libya's refusal to hand over his client to the international criminal court to face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Gaddafi was captured in 2011 by the Zintan militia which, more than two years later, refuses to hand him over to Tripoli.
ICC judges had passed a ruling in July that Libya's appeals to keep Gaddafi in custody were invalid and ordered that he should be handed over to the court.
However, Tripoli had refused to comply with the ICC's order saying repeatedly that it would hold its own trial.
Jones said that the foreign secretary William Hague's commitment to war crimes law, during a tour of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, were defunct as he is turning a blind eye to Libya's faults.
Jones said that Britain's decision to support a trade mission due in September would signal Tripoli that Libya's stance on Gaddafi's trial is acceptable to London, the report added.
Meanwhile, Gaddafi, as a channel to his father's foreign relations, can answer to the questions of French investigators who are examining allegations that he had channelled funds to support the election campaign of the former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
Amnesty International has warned that Ibrahim's death sentence would mean hundreds of former Gaddafi supporters, imprisoned across Libya, may face the same fate.
