A British couple have been reportedly jailed for sending abusive tweets threatening rape.

25-year-old John Nimmo and 23-year-old Isabella Sorley were found guilty of "improper use of a public electronic communications network" after the duo resorted to twitter to express their angst against the Bank of England's decision to put novelist Jane Austen on a 10 euro note.

The tweets that targeted journalist and activist Caroline Criado-Perez, who led a successful campaign to get more women on British currency, included threats like "rape her nice ass" and "I will find you", the Verge reported.

Nimmo has been sentenced to eight weeks in jail for posting 20 abusive tweets from five different twitter accounts.

Sorley faces up to twelve weeks in jail for posting atleast 16 abusive tweets aimed at the journalist and Labour politician Stella Creasy.
