The United Kingdom has reportedly ended their combat operations in Afghanistan that began 13 years ago as they handed over the last UK base in Afghanistan to the Afghan Security forces.

The Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes were lowered for the last time at Camp Bastion and Camp Leatherneck as the control of the two bases was handed over to Afghanistan, reported the BBC.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron posted on Twitter that he had made a commitment to get the armed forces out of Afghanistan by 2015 and the day saw the end of the nation's combat operations in Afghanistan. He also said that Britain would never forget those who lost their lives serving their country.

Almost 453 British troops were killed in the conflict that lasted for a decade. The death toll among U.S. military personnel stands at 2,349.
