The United Nations Security Council has finally called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after an emergency meeting on the issue.

In all, 501 people have reportedly died in the Gaza Strip since Israel's offensive, said Gaza's Ministry of Health.

While UN is trying to broker a ceasefire, United States Secretary of State John Kerry is due in Egypt to discuss the Gaza crisis.

John Kerry is expected to meet political leaders in Cairo today, reports the BBC.

Sunday was seen as the deadliest day since the Israeli offensive began on July 8.

Palestinian ambassador said that the UN must take immediate steps.
