UN Human Rights chief arrives in Lanka

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein has arrived in Sri Lanka on Saturday for a four day official visit at the invitation of the Sri Lankan Government.

During his visit, the UN rights chief will call on Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Leader of Opposition R. Sampanthan,reports Lanka Page website.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera and the UNICEF Representative in Sri Lanka, Una McCauley received the Rights Chief on his arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

The High Commissioner will discuss a range of current challenges and opportunities for strengthening the rule of law and protection of human rights in Sri Lanka, including reviewing the implementation of the recommendations made in his report to the Human Rights Council.

 

He will also throw light on Resolution 30/1 on 'promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka,'a UN statement said.

The resolution which was co-sponsored by Sri Lanka, was unanimously adopted by the Human Rights Council on 1 October 2015.

Zeid will have meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera and several other ministers as well as senior Government officials, civil society representatives, the tri-service chiefs, members of the diplomatic community in Colombo and the National Human Rights Commission.
