The United Nations Security Council has rejected a resolution that demanded a free Palestinian state and an end to Israeli occupation in the territory within three years.
Eight members out of 15 strong Security Council were in favour of the resolution while the U.S. and Australia voted against it, reported BBC.
The motion was submitted by Jordan after it had been agreed upon by 22 Arab states and the Palestinian Authority.
Israel condemned the resolution as a "gimmick". The resolution needed the support of at least nine members in order to pass.
However, the U.S. has a veto power to stop the resolution even if it gets passed through the support of nine members.
