The United Nations (UN) has said that at least 44 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks that targeted shelters at seven UN schools during last summer's war in Gaza.

While condemning the deaths, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that UN facilities were "inviolable," reported the BBC.

The investigation also revealed that Palestinian militants used three empty UN schools to store weapons, and that in two cases they likely fired from them.

The 50-day-long conflict killed over 2,260 people. According the UN estimates, at least 2,189 of the total were Palestinians, including more than 1,486 civilians. In Israel, about 60 soldiers were killed along with six civilians.
