United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his sympathy for the people killed in the recent devastating heatwave in Pakistan, his deputy spokesperson said.

In a press briefing, Farhan Haq said that Ban's thoughts and sympathies have gone out to those who had been suffering and added that he hopes that the situation will improve very swiftly, reported the Dawn.

Haq said that he was unsure if Pakistan had asked for any humanitarian assistance from the UN and added that the international body will respond if such a request had been made.

The heatwave has claimed more than 1,000 lives in Pakistan's Sindh province so far.
