The United Nations has warned that the failure to defend the Syrian town of Kobani from Islamic State (IS) militants can turn the area into another Srebrenica where thousands were massacred in 1995 as a result of failed global efforts to stop Bosnia's war.

According to the Guardian, Staffan de Mistura, the UN special envoy for Syria said, after IS extremists overran the headquarters of Kobani, that everyone should do whatever they can in order to stop the IS violence.

Nearly 8,000 Muslim men and boys were massacred in July 1995 by Serb forces in the worst atrocity on European soil since the second world war, said de Mistura.

The defenders of the town of Kobani are not being provided by enough ammunitions by the Turkish government and they are running out of weapons which is resulting into the take over of more and more territory by IS fighters, said a local activist.

De Mistura said that around 500-700 people were trapped in the town of Kobani and everyone could not remain silent anymore.
