Unidentified assailants attacked the office of a Tripura-based newspaper over the weekend, and killed three employees including the manager.

Assailants stormed the office of the Dainik Ganadoot, a Bengali daily in Agartala and stabbed to death 32-year-old proof reader Sujit Bhattacharjee and seriously injured 60-year-old manager Ranjit Choudhary and 40-year-old driver Balram Ghosh, both of whom died en route to the hospital.

The victims were attacked with sharp weapons.

The editor-cum-proprietor of "Dainik Ganadoot", Sushil Chowdhury, who resided in the same building, said that the intention of the assailants was to attack him. However due to mistaken identity they attacked the manager.

According to eyewitness, the two armed assailants came to the office on a motorcycle and after entering the newspaper offices asked for the manager, whom they strangled and stabbed several times.

Tripura's Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Bhanu Lal Saha condemned the incident and said it was difficult to determine whom the assailants wanted to target.

Various media organization and political parties, including The Agartala Press Club has condemned the attack and demanded better security for media employees in the state.

Meanwhile the Congress party had called a dawn to dusk strike in Agartala on May 21 to protest against this incident.
