As part of its social responsibility initiative, the Union Bank of India is to give financial support to over 6000 village and below poverty line girl children from across India.
This was declared by the bank's chairman and managing director, Mr. Arun Tiwari, at their Kochi lead branch.
As part of the program, he distributed cheques to six selected girls from two villages from Kerala.
Mr. Tiwari said the scheme was launched yesterday at a pan-India level, and added to be precise, the assistance to 6150 girl children from selected villages and poor family will be provided by the bank.
Under the Union Adarsh Gram Scheme, the bank will adopt one or two villages from ever state and district in India.
In Kerala, the villages of Kulayettikkara and Keecherry have been selected for overall socio-economic development and also to provide quality life to rural folks.
Out of these two villages, six girl children from BPL families will get financial assistance for their studies till the XII standard.
The bank claims that it holds the fifth largest nationalized bank of the country.
Established in the year 1919 and headquartered at Mumbai, the bank offers retail as well as wholesale banking services to over 50 million customers through its 3885 branches and more than 6600 ATMs.
The global business of the bank as on June 2014 stood at 5, 36, 824 crore rupees with deposits of Rs. 2,97,420 crore and Advances of 2,39,404 cr. rupees.
In the state, the bank has 226 branches and 374 ATMs.
