At least one university student wrote in his exam that sex was discovered in the 1800s by Charles Darwin and his contemporary Gregor Mendel.

The statement is just one of the many howlers that lecturers submitted to the Times Higher Education's annual exam howlers competition.

Adam Hart, a professor of science communication at the University of Gloucestershire, said that a student wrote that 'Sex has puzzled biologists ever since Darwin and Mendel discovered it,' Sky News reported.

Another blooper saw a student write that 'General Franco had been supported by right-wing panties.'

Among the other bloopers was one that read that several of acclaimed director Alfred Hitchcock's recurring themes arose, as he was a 'torched Catholic.'

Another student mixed his metaphors to describe Alain Resnais' controversial Holocaust docu 'Night And Fog' as 'a hotly contested potato.'

Another entry that was submitted said that Britain under the Cromwellian Protectorate had been a piranha state.
