The Department of Philately in Uttar Pradesh has successfully boosted the sale of the commemorative FIFA World Cup stamp.

The state Department of Posts said sales have doubled due to the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

"There is a lot of excitement among people regarding the stamps released on the occasion of the FIFA World Cup. Not only are stamp collectors enthusiastic about buying them, the youth and school going children are also ecstatic about buying these stamps. People from all aspects of society such as administrative officers, people associated with academia, everyone wants to make these stamps a part of their collection. Till now, we have sold stamps worth more than Rs 50,000 (829.46 USD)" said Director of Post Office, Allahabad, K.K.Yadav.

India is soon to host the under-17 World Cup, and if anything can be said from the sales of these stamps it is that football is fast gaining popularity in India.

The tournament where 32 nations have participated is the most watched event around the world. Host nation Brazil is pegged as a favourite to win for the sixth time.
