UP Polls: Congress demands FIR against PM Modi, BJP leaders

The Congress Party on Saturday asked the Election Commission to register an FIR against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for allegedly violating the model code for holding a roadshow in Varanasi without the required permit from the authorities.

In its complaint, the party said, that the Prime Minister had conducted road show from Banaras Hindu University for about 7 kilometers covering three Assembly Constituencies.

During his roadshow, the Prime Minister also went to Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Kaal Bhero Temple.

Congress requested the Election Commission to take action against all the BJP leaders who were part of the road show.

 

The Prime Minister's road show, which started at the main gate of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), was met with a horde of people shouting slogans in his praise. Men and women were dressed in saffron, highlighting the primary colour of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) flag.

Prime Minister Modi also garlanded the statue of freedom fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, who was also the founder of the BHU.

On his way, Prime Minister Modi also offered prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath temple.

The Prime Minister will address public meetings both in Varanasi and Jaunpur ahead of the seventh-phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The seventh-phase of Assembly polls is scheduled to take place on March 8, in which as many as 46 constituencies covering seven districts of Uttar Pradesh will cast their vote.

Meanwhile, a total of 37.85 percent voter turnout was recorded till 1 p.m. in the sixth phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2017.
