Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee expressed concern on Sunday over repeated disruptions in parliament, and suggested that people are losing faith in parliamentary democracy.
"It is a matter of deep concern. The political parties who talk about country, who talk of development, are not allowing the most important body to run smoothly. This is a shameful situation and I appeal to all political parties. People are losing faith in parliamentary democracy," he told media here.
Chatterjee also urged the young to come forward and participate in politics.
Earlier, on August 14, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till Monday (August 19) following several disruptions on various issues, including the Kishtwar violence, the separate state of Telangana and over a spat between the BJP and Trinamool Congress on creating a separate state of Gorkhaland out of the Darjeeling Hills District.
The house was first adjourned till noon over a Supreme Court order cancelling reservations in recruitment of faculty for super-speciality medical and engineering institutions.
According to reports, BJP member Jaswant Singh then raised the issue of Gorkhaland autonomy in Darjeeling, which agitated TMC members who shouted him down.
Both Houses have been repeatedly adjourned during the second half of the monsoon session, with members not allowing proceedings to commence and also indulging in repeated sloganeering on various issues.
