A U.S. appeals court has slashed Apple's overall 930 million dollar award, despite ruling that Samsung copied specific design patents in the brand's iPhone, saying that it wasn't infringing the gadget's overall look and feel.
The court based its decision on the idea that trade dress had to be based on aesthetic decisions meant to make something visually distinctive, and that the rules protecting it have to be balanced with "a fundamental right to compete through imitation of a competitor's product," reported The Verge.
The legal tussle between the two tech giants has been going on since 2011, when Apple claimed that several Samsung phones infringed its design and utility patents for its iPhone.
