US cooperating with India on Headley issue: Shinde

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Wednesday said United States is cooperating with India in investigations related to 26/11 Attacks accused David Headley.

"On my last visit to the U.S., I had met officials from Homeland Security and had discussed about Headley's arrest in the U.S. We have requested for more information on Headley and they are cooperating with us," Shinde told media here after addressing Indo-U.S. police chiefs conference.

Responding to questions on the lack of coordination between the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and US federal agencies, he said, "There was no discussion on NIA. It has not come up yet,"

 

Earlier, Shinde inaugurated the conference, which was attended by U.S. police chiefs from major cities and their technology partners.

Addressing the conference, Shinde stressed on the need for improvement in policing techniques and also emphasized on a mechanism in participation with the technology so as to detect crimes, which are in a premature phase.

He also said, "There is an immediate need for police to play a more positive role in educating people and making them aware about their duties in helping the country in fighting terrorists.

The conference is aimed at opening the floor for technology partners of both countries to evolve an institutionalized mechanism so as to work incessantly on sustainable technology upgradation for perceptible reduction in crime and providing a more secure and livable environment to citizens.
