US President Barack Obama has met his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro on Friday after more than 50 years in Panama City for the Summit of the Americas.
According to CNN, the two nations have barely been on speaking terms for more than 50 years.
National Security Council spokesperson Bernadette Meehan issued a statement saying that "President Obama and President Castro greeted each other and shook hands" at the summit.
Cuba and the United States had endured a half-century of hostility.
In Panama, Obama is expected to announce he's removing Cuba from the United States' list of states that sponsor terrorism.
