A federal judge has reportedly ruled that use of drones for commercial purpose is now legal.
This comes after the Federal Aviation Administration filed a lawsuit against a drone operator for 'illegally' using a drone to make a commercial model for University of Virginia.
According to Tech Crunch, the alleged drone operator fought the 10,000-dollar fine on the grounds that the FAA had yet to make an official regulation on model aircraft such as the drone used in this situation.
The federal judge with the National Transportation safety board sided with the plaintiff despite the FAA's claim that the operator had been 'careless and reckless' and did not qualify as a hobbyist, the report said.
The judge said that the FAA has not made any legally binding rules against the practice, adding that the plaintiff's model aircraft operation was not subject to FAR regulation and enforcement.
The report said that the commercial drone industry is ready to begin, but the FAA is yet to institute official regulations governing the use of commercial drones, despite Congress' assigned deadline of December 2015.
