Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, said that the US and India is rooted in shared values of democracy and freedom.

A statement issued the following Ryan's meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, said, "The relationship between the United States and India is rooted in shared values of democracy and freedom. We had a great opportunity today to build on this critical partnership by discussing ways to enhance our economic and defense cooperation."

The statement added that Ryan also condemned the 'senseless' murder of an Indian engineer in Kansas last month.

"In our meeting, I expressed the House's condolences on the death of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, who was senselessly murdered last week in Kansas."

Kuchibhotla was shot dead by an US Navy veteran in Austin's Bar and Grill at Olathe, Kansas, in an apparent racial attack.

"Our peoples must continue to stand together, and I look forward to working with Foreign Secretary Jaishankar in the years ahead," the statement added.
