The United States congratulated Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his victory in the recently-concluded presidential polls in the Maldives, and expressed keenness in working with the new government in areas of shared interest.

"The United States congratulates Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his victory in Maldives' September 23 presidential election. The United States commends the Maldivian people for their commitment to the democratic process and exceptional level of participation in an election that has ushered in a new chapter in their country's history. We expect all parties to respect the will of the Maldivian people and support a peaceful transition of power through the November 17 inauguration," a statement issued by US State Department Spokesperson, Heather Nauert, read.

In a hotly-contested election in the island nation, Solih, a senior opposition leader, emerged victorious by garnering 134,616 votes, according to the provincial results announced by the Maldivian Election Commission. Incumbent Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen, however, secured 96,132 votes only.

Official results are scheduled to be announced before September 30. However, Yameen, in a televised speech on Monday, said he accepted the people's mandate and conceded defeat.
