U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken has appreciated Pakistan's role in facilitating reconciliatory talks between Afghanistan and Taliban.
During a meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs, Tariq Fatemi, Blinken assured Pakistan that the U.S. would play its due role in maintaining peace in Afghanistan, reported The Express Tribune.
Fatemi, on the other hand, reiterated Prime Minister Sharif's intention of maintaining cordial relations with all countries, including its neighbours.
Earlier, Washington had hailed the first round of talks between the Afghan Taliban and the High Peace Council as a 'positive step' and had lauded Pakistan's role in it.
During a press briefing in Washington, State Department deputy spokesperson Mark Toner had also commended the government of Afghanistan for initiating the dialogue process and had 'strongly backed' their efforts and prioritisation of peace and reconciliation.
